Alright, our first prototype worked… Hell yeah! Jump on over to Part II if you missed the video of Conor using the first prototype.
As part of the test run, we established 15cm was not enough distance to be effective. The user was basically stepping into the obstacle as the warning went off. We also needed to get the vibration working so as to not remove another sense from someone with visual impairment.
We decided to utilise the SRF01 sensor which can range from 0 - 6m in distance. More than enough.
Unfortunately, this sensor is far more complicated. With an SRF01 you can pair 15 different sensors together, assign them different addresses, range in cm or inches and much more. On top of this; unlike the previous sensor which has a separate sender and receiver, the SRF01 is a serial interface which sends and receives from the same unit.
These changes meant going back to the drawing board with 0 reusable code.
We took a similar approach to the last prototype and strapped the sensor to a pair of glasses and taped it all together pretty.
The sensor was made to ping at a distance of 60cm and trigger the vibration motor, as well as the sound (sound to be removed).
Video will be in the next release of Sight Not Seen.
